Posted - July 18 2004 : 7:58:17 PM I'm interested in wiring in a knock light per chitown tech instructions found on the homepage. I don't know much about the terminology used in describing our ECMs. I have the ultimate chip and I was wondering if I could wire the light from it? Also, is the MEMCAL the "chip" with the blue cover on it that gets piggybacked onto the ultimate? Or would I solder wires onto the bottom of the ultimate chip...I have no clue if you can guess from the ramblings and any help would be appreciated. Thanks. |

Posted - July 23 2004 : 9:54:16 PM I have the Ult. guage style w/ knock LED in my '93 Ty. I like it a lot. I believe the LED starts to flicker red around 4*-6* and will stay solid red after that. |

Posted - July 22 2004 : 2:23:10 PM No the poor mans guage I was refering to wasn't the LED but the J&S Unit I have. It is just wired to the Knock sensor and picks up anything that comes down it. So it is a POS. The Ultimate light is the way to go. Just wish it would display the degrees of knock.

Posted - July 22 2004 : 1:37:44 PM I'm gonna try and wire in a light in the next couple of days. I'll post on how it works and what it displays compared to datamaster (ie: low knock looks different than high knock) |

Posted - July 21 2004 : 5:55:08 PM Hey A-Rod, sounds like your in a whole different league when it comes to tuning. Sounds like a sweet setup...
Your right about the poor mans guage but it works pretty good. Hell I'm still using my X-ray.

Posted - July 21 2004 : 07:43:47 AM Hmm... made I will upgrade mine to see how they are doing it. But since I am no longer running the ultimate not sure if it is worth doing it. I got the Autoprom with Tunerpro RT allows me to tune it real time. You just upload a bin to the Autoprom and then you can make changes to it on the fly. I have one of my Ultimate settings in there and have made some small changes to it. Waiting to get the WBo2 installed so I can get some accurate readings and make some changes to fit my truck. The Ultimate is a great chip to start from.
Once I go to the eDist, I will be replacing the J&S system on it so I will no longer have a poor mans knock sensor guage or the poor mans AFR meter. I have the AFR Meter covered since the WBo2 comes with a nice display. Just want to get something to replace the knock so I know when I am getting some.

Posted - July 21 2004 : 01:02:17 AM You can tell how much knock your getting by the intensity of the light and how long it blinks.
If your getting a little knock, the light will be dim and blink very quickly. If your getting hard knock it will light up like a christmas tree and won't blink as much.
Maybe Todd will come out with the meter version next year....

Posted - July 20 2004 : 10:45:58 PM Forgot to mention, BG brought up that the Caspers guage is before the filtering circuit, so it will get a lot of false knock. So that doesn't sound like a soultion. |

Posted - July 20 2004 : 10:44:24 PM How does that light work? Does it just come on when there is knock and how much? I would like to know how much knock I am getting. 1 degree, 2 degree don't care. 9 degrees, care very much. Just wish there was a nice solution for it. |

Posted - July 20 2004 : 5:05:22 PM Heres another option... Contact Todd Austin and trade in your old ultimate and upgrade to the newer version w/the knock light.
I upgraded to the guage style and it was well worth it (comes with a improved thicker, schielded harness).
Prices... "radar detector" style with integral knock detector, the cost is $155, $165 for remote knock LED. The "gauge" style is $165 and comes with the integral knock LED. Here's Todds email address. [email protected]

Posted - July 19 2004 : 10:20:42 PM Nope not running FAST. Dennis Hogan (don't think he is registered yet on the board) is running one in his Stock Ty. He said to give Caspers a call about it since it was a long time since he hooked his up.
I am looking into it and I'll let you know what I find out. |

Posted - July 19 2004 : 10:15:19 PM Paul, I replied to your post on syty.net. Are you running FAST? And you said someone with the stock ECM ran it and it worked pretty well? Looks like a pretty good idea. I think until I sock away $150 I'll try and hook up the $3 knock light. |

Posted - July 19 2004 : 9:56:37 PM Here is some info on the MEMCAL. http://syclone.invisibill.net/memcal.html for MEMCAL details.
Here is what I am looking at doing for my Knock sensor: Casper Electronics makes a knock sensor gage with several lights on it for degrees of knock. Seen it used on several Ty's. All had FAST on them but one I saw that didn't and it worked. I think all you need is the Gage and the ESC Sensor from a Buick. I am looking into it and I will let you know what I find out.
Gage is $79.95 and the ESC module is $79.95
Here is a link to one style of the gage. (They make black face, white face, etc.) http://www.casperselectronics.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=102039&Category_Code=
Note on the gage is: NOTE: Wires to a standard GM ESC module, used in the Grand National turbo applications; if you need to use this gage in a non-turbo application, an ESC module is required.
Hope that helps.
