This is Ben, who was at the last meet in Rainbow Falls.

I posted this same thing on www.syty.net in hope of some response. I know it's short notice, but I would really like this thing running right:

Alright Western Washingtonians, I would like to come over this weekend for a good looking over of the Typhoon to find out why she is misbehaving so badly. It's officially beyond my scope, but I want to learn how to tame this beast properly. I know I still need proper vac lines and fittings, the timing is messed up bad (I have no idea what is up with it, and I think this is the major problem), and the intake/throttle body could use a good cleaning. I'm disconnecting the EGR after it's cleaned. I think the valve covers are going to need to come off to see where true top dead center is, unless somebody on the west side knows some kind of trick. A piston stop won't work because there is no way to hand turn the engine with it in the engine bay. I think the harmonic balancer's slipped... She is knocking if I get in to ANY boost now, even 1 psi unless it is retarded so much that it bogs... I want so badly for this thing to run right! I've been babying it since I bought it and will not drive it unless datamaster is open and I can see the spark retard. Let me know if anybody can help me out this weekend and tame this beast. Maybe we can make a group "fix-bens-incredibly-sick-ty" out of this!

Some stores over here have a few feet of misc. vacuum lines, but believe it or not, nobody has any T fittings or elbows, or anything like that. I am going to have to visit a shop over there this weekend and buy this stuff. I can paypal somebody to pick up what I need if the shops aren't open on the weekends. It's had a recent tuneup with plugs, wires, etc., so I think the timing is the only thing real crazy with it. The only thing that's not stock are rubber hoses, an ATR Pitbull street, and an ATR cold air intake. That's it.

Anybody willing to lend a helping hand or brain, reply! I'm more than willing to go anywhere from Gig Harbor/Olympia to Seattle to Bellingham. I'm just a kid trying to keep the hot rodding do-it-yourselfer alive that's more than willing to learn. Let me know what you think. I've heard Roland is a God with this sort of thing at the meet last weekend... hehe.

I want to start modifying and playing with this truck, but I need a near-perfect stock tune before I can do anything. I'm not about to throw parts at it in hopes of it fixing itself!

PS Ill buy the beer.

-Ben

I can go down in to Oregon too, if need be.
(360)2203422 is my number. I have family in Issiquah and Bellingham, just to let people know where I can stay; I can always sleep in the Ty, too! :)

Well, it's three months later and I am still having the same problems. I am running around in circles and have done everything I can think of except swap the motor.

I still need help.

Piston stop will work. Just take all the spark plugs out. Then you can put a socket on the alternator pulley nut and turn the entire motor. Done it on 3 different ty's that way.

I would be willing to look at it when I have some free time. Right now I don't have much of that.

I have checked for TDC and found that my harmonic balancer has slipped or my timing chain has skipped a few teeth. With it remarked and set to zero, I get massive knock. I have been getting about 8 degrees of spark retard at 50% throttle and it starts around 8 psi.

The truck runs fine at correct 0, but I get massive KR. If I retard it about 5-10 degrees at the distributer, all is well (obviously), but the truck begins to run like a dog.

I can't figure it out and would love help if you are willing to show me the ropes. I am in Pullman, (8 hours away), and I'm more than willing to come over to the west side for this. If you are open for any time this weekend, that would be great.

Even with this much trouble the truck has been giving me, I still love it and want her to run well. I don't know when the last time it ever has was. I bought it on a whim and I don't think it was running quite right for the previous owner as well as far as timing and KR goes. His best datamaster run was a 14.1, whatever that does or doesn't proove. :>

It only has ~60000 miles on it.

I just reread the first post in this thread, and I've done all the essentials like replace vacuum lines, find TDC, clean the intake with Top End Cleaner, fuel filter, plugs, wires, etc. etc., so I don't really know what else to do.

I haven't tried a different ECM/chip yet, either.
